The Vijiji Center is a small lodge on the slopes of Mount Meru, in the village of Nguruma, on the outskirts of the city of Arusha. Anchored on a large land landscaped with gardens, shrubs and trees attracting a great variety of birds. There are 12 simple but comfortable rooms, gathered around a swimming pool, all equipped with private bathrooms, arranged in round bungalows with roofs reflecting traditional African style and 4 other rooms in a modern Tanzanian style. The restaurant offers a generous buffet where vegetables, fruit and meat come from the women’s market located right next to the centre. Tanzanian dishes are honoured even though special requests (gluten free, dairy-free, etc.) are taken into account.
Vijiji means “villages” in Swahili. The Center seeks to generate encounters with the Meru people. One of the most important activities Vijiji offers is de discovery of Nguruma Village where we take participants through the village, explaining the Meru way of life, the farming system and the key crops (bananas, corn/maize, beans, vegetables), the ways in which families live, how the local women’s market works, and other cultural information about the Meru. Guests often stop in to visit the farm of one of our neighbors to see this first hand. They also do a tour of the coffee farming and this is followed by a coffee workshop. Experienced guides can also take you on a wildlife safari to Tanzania’s world-famous national parks
The Vijiji Center is a welcoming home for travelers, generating employment for the families of the village and an interaction with the locals. The creators also launched the Vijiji Foundation in order to participate a little more in local projects such as the modernisation of their primary school.
The accommodation package includes breakfast for 2 guests.
