Ecotourism and Sea Turtle Conservation With Sirenito Macho, Mexico

  • Project leader: Sirenito Macho initiative, which combines conservation, awareness-raising, and responsible tourism to create a lasting impact in the region
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Location: Playa Las Peñitas, in the municipality of Marquelia, on the Costa Chica de Guerrero, Mexico

Context

Since 2003, Sirenito Macho has been working to protect and conserve sea turtles at Playa Las Peñitas, in the municipality of Marquelia, on Guerrero’s Costa Chica. The center combines conservation, awareness-raising, and responsible tourism to create a lasting impact in the region.

It welcomes both travelers and school groups, offering educational and environmental awareness activities, as well as indigenous tourism experiences. Visitors learn about the life cycle of sea turtles that come to lay their eggs on the beach and understand the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem of the Mexican Pacific.

By supporting Sirenito Macho, donors contribute directly to the protection of sea turtles and the sustainable development of the local community, while helping to preserve the pristine beaches of the Pacific.

Word From the Ambassador

Carolann Forgues, volunteer with Village Monde

“I was fortunate enough to spend four days with Don Javier and his family at the Sirenito Macho sea turtle protection center. During my stay, Don Javier shared with me his passion for protecting sea turtles, a commitment he pursues diligently, often in the middle of the night.

His work makes a real difference on the beaches of Marquelia. Unfortunately, each outing reveals a high number of plundered nests, and without Don Javier’s involvement, far fewer baby turtles would be born in the region.

I am extremely proud to be an ambassador for this worthy cause and to support the protection and conservation of Pacific sea turtles.”
