Mexico

Mexico is a Latin American country, bounded in the southeast by Guatemala and Belize, and in the northwest by the United States. It is a very large territory, with almost two million square kilometers. With a population of 133,642,035, it is one of the most populous countries in the world. Mexicans speak Spanish as their main official language, but more than 7 million people also speak a local indigenous language. The different cultures and civilizations populated the territory long before the arrival of the Spaniards in 1521.    

The country is facing several political and social crises. Inequalities are easily observable, especially between urban and rural areas. In some regions, such as Chiapas, and particularly in areas inhabited by indigenous populations, poverty is acute, causing many problems. For example, migration to the north is a reality that is destroying families and communities, especially in rural and indigenous areas, which are suffering greatly from the rural exodus. Drug trafficking and the constant war between drug cartels, in turn, generates a climate of major insecurity on a national scale.     

Nevertheless, Mexico is one of the most important tourist centers in Latin America. The tourism sector accounts for almost 16% of GDP and provides 13% of jobs. Although Mexico is a country that welcomes many tourists, the latter continue to prefer the large seaside resorts, which unfortunately have very negative consequences for the local populations as well as on the environment. It is essential to make a transition and position Mexico differently. Mexico is much more than its seaside resorts. It is a destination with a lively culture, traditions of millennia, but also an incredible natural destination. Mexico is an attractive and diverse destination. Well developed, sustainable tourism activity allows local communities to live from a complementary activity while enhancing their ancestral knowledge and maintaining their cultural heritage, among others.
