3- to 5-week assignments, between July and December 2025
In 2025, eight explorers took part in voluntary international solidarity exploration assignments, with the goal of identifying, meeting, certifying, and promoting solidarity-based, community-led, and Indigenous tourism initiatives.
Their journey began with a training weekend focused, among other things, on understanding the role of the explorer, the potential of tourism when developed and managed to generate positive impacts, Village Monde’s sustainable tourism label, key elements of itinerary design, content creation, and more. At the end of this preparation period, each explorer was assigned her exploration destination.
The explorations took place in territories with diverse cultural and tourism realities, notably in the Yukon (Canada), Kabylia (Algeria), Mapuche territories in Chile, along the Ruta del Mate in northeastern Argentina, as well as in Morocco and Mexico. This geographic diversity enabled a comparative approach to tourism practices and local dynamics, across contexts that are both emerging and already engaged in responsible tourism initiatives.
On the ground, the explorers worked with local partners to prepare their itineraries, in whole or in part. They met with key stakeholders involved in local tourism development, discovering a wide range of initiatives. They also contributed to mobilizing existing networks and to the creation of new collaborations.
A particularly significant aspect in Latin America was Indigenous tourism, which goes beyond economic activity to help revalue traditional knowledge, strengthen territorial self-governance, and contribute to the protection of natural resources.
Upon their return, the explorers were invited to share their experience freely, through a variety of formats: photo exhibitions, conferences, workshops with colleagues, articles, or photo magazines. The objective was to raise awareness around more conscious travel while amplifying the initiatives encountered.
A celebration event for the results of the 2025 cohort will take place on February 7, 2026.
