Context
The agricultural sector is one of the most important economic sectors for Indonesia’s growth: 30% of its territory is devoted to agriculture, whether for the production of rice, sugar cane, tea, and especially coffee, Indonesia being the world’s 4th largest coffee producer. In 2016, the agricultural sector accounted for 13.1% of total GDP and provided employment for 32% of the working population. In 2018, the production of coffee and its commodities provided employment for 1.88 million Indonesians. What’s more, small-scale coffee growers owned around 96% of coffee fields. In 2021, despite the effects of the health crisis on Indonesia’s economic system and the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector, this economic sector still accounts for over 13% of total GDP.
