The Yerba Mate Route: A Unifying Identity
Auteur : Rafael Forteza

The Ruta de la Yerba Mate (RYM) goes far beyond a simple tourist itinerary: it offers a deep immersion into Argentine culture and identity. Led by Alejandro Gruger, its director, the RYM brings together more than 170 local initiatives around a national symbol: yerba mate.
A Long History
Humans have had a long-standing relationship with yerba mate. Long before the arrival of the Spanish, the Guaraní people, whose territory stretches from the Amazon to the Río de la Plata, were already preparing mate infusions. Over the years, yerba mate has become deeply intertwined with Argentine identity, evolving into a daily ritual of sharing.
A Living Journey
The route crosses the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes, Argentina’s main yerba mate producers, and connects iconic sites such as the Iguazú Falls and the Esteros del Iberá. It offers immersion into a wide range of yerba mate enterprises, from agro-industries to traditional estancias. Visitors can explore the breathtaking landscapes of northeastern Argentina and connect with them by tasting one of its greatest treasures, yerba mate, of course.
A Solidarity Route
The Ruta de la Yerba Mate is also a unifying initiative. Beyond promoting yerba mate projects in Argentina, Alejandro aims to bring together a global community of mate lovers, transcending cultures. As he told me during our interview: “Mate grows, without worrying about borders, where there is love.”
Living the Route
To truly experience the Ruta de la Yerba Mate, one needs time, curiosity, and openness. Your journey along the Route will unfold through encounters, always with yerba mate at your side, whose greatest power is to bring people together
